The cabinet
secretary has turned down the request by the student leaders and the
administration that the institution be closed and students transferred.
The cabinet
secretary’s directive will see the Garrissa Teachers college reopened barely
six months after the college’s administration opted to shut down the
institution.
The CS has
further directed that the national teachers examinations be conducted at the
college. This directive implies that all students who were in their final year
at Garissa Teachers College must report back in order to sit for their final
exams.
The CS has
directed the college administration can only allow application for academic
deferrals from first years only. The directive further states that ordinary
transfers for garissa College to other colleges should not be effected until
September 2016.
The CS
directive further states that the security around the college will be beefed up
through deployment of more officers and by erection of a perimeter wall around
the college.
The reopening
of the college is good news for the residents of Garissa County since the college
is the only institution in the Northestern Kenya that offers teaching.
Note: Garissa Teachers College and Garissa University College are two different institutions.
