Position yourself for Public service Commision promotions 2015

Forget about corruption and nepotism for a moment. Forget also about being outspoken in your workplace. Here are some of the key things that will allow you to get promotion by the Public Service Commission of Kenya. It is not exclusively higher education that will earn you a promotion by the Public Service Commission.

Work experience is golden but you can’t wait until your hair turns gray so that you get promoted. Can you? There are triggers that will propel you faster so that you are promoted from one job group to the next.

The following are key triggers that will earn you a promotion sooner than later;

·        Capacity building.
Capacity building will greatly earn you points in the face of the public service commission. Capacity building initiatives could be from either the private sector or the government or foreign states. Some of the common government bodies that offer capacity building include the Kenya School of Government and the Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA).

Whenever adverts for capacity building exercises are up, don’t fold your hands. Run and run after them. They will add a lot of value into your resume. Also remember that a certificate is usually provided as a sign of your participation

·        Seminars
Seminars that are relevant to your area of work will contribute significantly in setting you apart from your work mates. Find time to attend these seminars. Don’t be a workaholic.

·        Publications
A Publication in a world class peer-reviewed journal is the ultimate factor that will set you apart. If you publish severally then it shows that you are doing research. A year has twelve months. Isn’t it? Well, if you can work on a research paper within a period of six months then you can produce two papers a year. A single publication in itself carries a lot of weight (It can even earn you a job in a university).

For example, if you work under the National Treasury, you can do research and publish your findings in a journal like The Economic Journal of the Royal Economic Society. If you are in the Ministry of Agriculture, then you can publish your papers in a journal like the Journal of Royal Agricultural Society.

·        Scholarships
Did you see that scholarship advert? It was somewhere in the internet and another advert was in the newspapers. Well, if you have never attempted to apply for any of these scholarships then you need to wake up from your deep slumber. Public servants easily secure scholarships particularly those from foreign governments. If you secure a scholarship of such nature, you are almost 99.99% assured of a promotion once you return back to Kenya.

·        Exchange programs
For those who dare to look out through the window and search for exchange programs there day of promotion is near. Exchange programs especially those that will see you go to abroad for a week or a month will add priceless value to your resume. Why don’t you use your position as a public servant to secure an exchange program in 2015?

·        Membership in professional bodies.

This is not about being a committee member of a village cattle dip. This is about securing membership in world class professional bodies such as the Royal Economic Society, Royal Engineers Association, Royal Society of Chemistry etc.

Being a member in professional bodies signifies that you are up-to-date with what is happening in your field. This will help in adding you points for promotion.
