the latest harmonization, Job group N house allowance has been increased
by 60% in Nairobi and 47% in Mombasa, Malindi, Kilifi, Kwale, Kisumu and Lamu.

House
allowance for job group N has been increased from KSh. 24,000 to Ksh. 38,500
per month for Kenya civil servants working in Nairobi. This represents a 60% increase
in house allowance.
House allowance in
County Headquarters
Civil
servants in Job group N in the towns of Mombasa, Kisumu, Malindi, Kilifi, Lamu,
Kwale and Naivasha will earn a housing allowance of Ksh. 22,000 per month.
Previously, civil servants in Job Group N earned a house allowance of KSh. 15,000.
This represents a 47% increase in house allowance.
Civil
servants in Job group N in the towns of Nyeri, Eldoret, Kericho, Kakamega,
Kisii, Embu, Nanyuki, Nakuru, Lodwar and Garissa will earn a house allowance of
KSh. 18,000 per month. Previously, civil servants in this group earned a house
allowance of KSh. 13,000. This represents a 38% increase in house allowance.

Other Areas
Civil
servants in job group N in other county headquarters and other areas will earn
a house allowance of Ksh. 15,400 per month. Previously, the civil servants in this
job group earned a house allowance of KSh. 11,000. This represents a 40%
increase in house allowance.
Quality of living
based on the current house allowance
Generally,
Workers in job group N will secure better housing conditions in areas such as
Lodwar, Garissa, Kilifi and Kwale without having to dig deep into their house
allowances. Those in towns like Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, Mombasa and Eldoret
may have to spend all their house allowance in order to enjoy descent housing
in these towns.
The
cost of house rent is much lower in the towns of Kilifi, Lodwar, Garissa,
Kilifi and Kwale compared to Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu and Eldoret.
Civil
servants in Job Group N stand to save some money out of their house allowances
if they are in stations other than Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu and Mombasa.
Remarks
The
house allowances are highest in Nairobi followed by county headquarters. House
allowances in other areas are much lower.
House
allowances for Job group N are realistic with respect to the current cost of living
in Kenya. Civil servants in this job group are earning just the right amount to
secure a good house. If one has to save on the house allowance then he or she
can easily afford descent houses at a lower cost particularly in towns
such as Kilifi, Lodwar, Garissa and Kwale.
