In
synch with the rise in the cost of living in Kenya, job group L house allowance
has been increased by 60% in Nairobi and 47% in Mombasa, Kisumu, malindi,
Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale and Naivasha.
House allowance in
Nairobi
House
allowance for job group L has been increased from KSh. 20,000 to Ksh. 28,000
per month for Kenya civil servants working in Nairobi. This new rate represents
a 40% increase in house allowance.
House allowance in
County Headquarters
Civil
servants in Job group L in the towns of Mombasa, Kisumu, Malindi, Kilifi, Lamu,
Kwale and Naivasha will earn a housing allowance of Ksh. 22,000 per month. Previously, civil servants in Job Group N earned
a house allowance of KSh. 15,000. This new rate represents a 47% increase in
house allowance.
Civil
servants in Job group L in the towns of Nyeri, Eldoret, Kericho, Kakamega,
Kisii, Embu, Nanyuki, Nakuru, Lodwar and Garissa will earn a house allowance of
KSh. 16,500 per month. Previously,
civil servants in this group earned a house allowance of KSh. 12,000. This
represents a 37.5% increase in house allowance.
House Allowance in
Other Areas
Civil
servants in job group L in other county headquarters and other areas will earn
a house allowance of Ksh. 13,000 per
month. Previously, the civil servants in this job group earned a house
allowance of KSh. 10,000. This represents a 40% increase in house allowance.
Remarks
The
only difference between a civil servant in job group J who is stationed in
Nairobi and those in Major towns is only Ksh. 6,000. This difference is small given the general cost of live in
the city of Nairobi. Those in major towns will save on their house allowances
more than those in the capital Nairobi.
Quality of living
based on the current house allowance
Job
group J workers in areas such as Garissa, Lodwar, and Kilifi are guaranteed of the ability to afford good houses. Good and decent houses are very cheap in these
areas. With a house allowance of Ksh. 16,500, one can rent a good house and on top of that save some tens of thousands of shillings.
