KNUT SG, Wilson Sossion, has cleared the air over the signing of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Sossion was speaking after being re-elected for another term during the 59th KNUT election.

Sossion said that KNUT and TSC CBA was not signed on 2nd March 2016 because of... [Continue reading]

Here is the Sossion's statement (Verbatim).

"Moving forward, we will not deviate from the objectives, the original objectives of ensuring fair remuneration of teachers in this country so that they can live quality life  and be quality teachers and also will not lose the objective of continuing to campaign and pledge the Government of Kenya  on the need to  hire enough teachers, to improve the quality of education in this country.

Teachers out there expect a substantial outcome of what they struggled for and what was validly awarded by the Court; the 50-60. And eeh,  we are optimistic that we should be able to sign the CBA that will benefit teachers, eeh, moving forward beyond this election.

The teachers of this country have demonstrated unity that has never been seen before in any union elections. We are 59 years old but this 59th election has attracted the  highest turnout at the branches and the full participation of all our delegates here at Moi Stadium, Kasarani. All that is happening [here] is within the spirit and aspiration of teachers.

Those of us who have been elected today have a great task ahead of us to execute the objectives and the mandates of the union within the framework of our strategic plan than spans up to 2019 and also within  the framework of emerging global policies and domestic policies like the Sustainable Development Agenda.

There is a lot for us to do and we will do without fear.

We must achieve what we are pursuing. What we are pursuing is  not new. It has been analysed  by different groups.

As the economy  grows, and as inflation continues affecting the basic income of workers, then salaries must be reviewed. It is constitutional. It has nothing to do with  individuals in Government or even ourselves as individuals in the union. It is the right of workers. It is the constitutional right that workers are entitled to a fair remuneration.

Indeed, what we are struggling for is what we call a living wage for workers. That is why unions were created...

The matter that has been  controversial [since]  2015 has not been swept under the carpet. Indeed, the president's directive on 7th of November was that  we must  conclude the CBA within  6 months. So indeed there is a lot of commitment from the other side of Government.

We would have signed this CBA by 2nd; two days ago. But out of a number of logistics, we have been requested to hold on  for a few more days.

Signing CBA, we shall sign whose component [is based on] the 50-60. That is not negotiable anymore. It is a matter of how and when we shall sign.

Really that gives us great assurance..."
