The
next time you are driving on the Kenyan roads you better know that you will be slapped with
an instant penalty of Kshs. 10,000 for a single offence. Several offences can be put
together within no time to take the total payable fine to Kshs. 50,000.
Here
are the instant NTSA fines and penalties for offences that are listed below;
Offences Relating to Driving
- Driving
a vehicle on a footpath: Kshs. 5,000 fine.
- Driving
on or through a pavement or a pedestrian walkway: Kshs. 5,000 fine.
- Driving
without identification plates affixed: Kshs. 10,000 fine.
Speed Limit Fines
The
following are the fines relating to NTSC speed limits. Take not of that red sign
on the left hand signed of the road marked 50 KpH. Here are the speed limit

Exceeding the Indicated
50 kph
- Exceeding
by 1-5 kph: Kshs. 500.
- Exceeding
by 6-10 kph: Kshs. 3,000.
- Exceeding
by 11-15 kph: Kshs. 6,000.
- Exceeding by 16-20kph: Kshs. 10,000.
Please
note that the fines will be imposed only if you exceed 50kph n a section of
the road where the speed limit has been indicated at 50kph. As seen above, a fine of
Kshs. 10,000 will be imposed immediately if the limit is exceeded by 20kph.
That is, at 70kph, a fine of Kshs. 10,000 is already hovering. Therefore,
driving at 80kph in a section where the limit is 50kph will attract a fine of
10,000.
Exceeding Speed Limit Prescribed
for a Vehicle Model
Most
cars have their prescribed limit to be 80kph except heavy commercial trucks where
the limit is 65. If the prescribed limits are exceeded, these are the
penalties.
- Exceeding
by 1-5 kph: Kshs. 500.
- Exceeding
by 6-10 kph: Kshs. 3,000.
- Exceeding
by 11-15 kph: Kshs. 6,000.
- Exceeding
16-20kph: Kshs. 10,000.
Fines Relating to Driver's Conduct
The following are fines imposed if the driver fails to;
- Carry a driving license: Kshs. 1,000.
- Renew driving license: Kshs. 1,000.
- Follow indications of the traffic lights: Kshs. 3,000.
- Follow any indications given by a police officer in uniform: Kshs. 3,000.
- Faulire to Stop when required to do so by a police officer in uniform: Kshs. 5,000.
Driving while using a mobile phone: Kshs. 2,000.
