Different
communities have different ways in which they handle the departure of their
members from this world. Unlike in several communities where people wail and
cry uncontrollably, in Luo Nyanza, death, as you now, is celebrated.
The
celebration of death in Luo Nyanza is epitomized by disco matanga; an overnight
song and dance preceding the actual burial. Disco matanga, is a highly social
event. Ladies and men who like to “hook up” rarely miss disco matanga. It is during
this disco event that ladies can meet with men and have a good time till dawn.
Disco
matanga appeals greatly to teenagers and the youth due to the disco aspect of
it as well as the socialization aspect. This has resulted in some negative social.
These impacts are mainly in terms of early teenage pregnancies and early
marriages.
Disco
matanga is a traditional event. Hence, it is practiced perfectly in the remote
villages. The disco dance starts at around 7:00 PM; just after night fall. The
dance is done under total or partial darkness for “Perfect enjoyment”. Due to technological
advancement, music systems are normally used. The music played can either be secular
or religious depending on the bereaved family.
